Los Angeles, California – Over twenty teachers are camping out in South Central Los Angeles at Santee High School, a Mayoral Partnership school, in protest of LAUSD increase in Class size, teacher layoffs and Wasteful Spending by Mayor’s Educational Staff. They are joined by Hunger Strikers who are now on 15 days without food. Tents and Posters line the walls on the front entrance of the school. The objective of these actions is to Call attention to LA Mayor Villaraigosa’s own wasteful school spending by hiring outside consultants, more Managerial staff, broken promises of increased funding, and staying quiet while the LAUSD school board increases class sizes and lay-off 1/3 of Santee Staff. The Teachers at Santee High School call on the Mayor to do more to stop the layoffs at his partnership Schools and in LAUSD. Mayor Villaraigosa has done little Stop the Cuts at his schools or any other schools in LAUSD. At Santee extra funding promised has been mostly used on outside consultants and Managerial staff and NOT on the Classroom. Teachers at Santee have overwhelmingly voted NO Confidence in Mayor’s educational leadership. Santee Camp-out Participants are joined by Hunger striking teachers who currently have over 15 days without FOOD! Demands 1) Protect out students’ education by NOT increasing class size. 2) Protect the future of education in LAUSD by NOT laying off our new teachers. 3) Demand LA Mayor do more to protect his partnership schools and LAUSD and stop wasteful spending.
