F O R I MM E D I A T E R E L E A S E ENGLISH - http://tr.im/owYv ESPAÑOL - http://tr.im/owYG June 11, 2009 - Los Angeles, CA Co-founder of the UFW and Human Rights Activist, Dolores Huerta, will visit Hunger Striking Educators' Encampment on June 12 at the Los Angeles Unified School District headquarters. Teachers and Community members will continue the hunger strike as the encampment moves to LAUSD headquarters. Despite various pleas by Hunger Striking teachers and community, LAUSD continues on its course to dramatically raise class sizes and fire over 2,000 educators which will have devastating impacts in our schools. Dolores Huerta will meet with Hunger Strikers and lend her support to the Hungry 4 a Better Education Campaign. Huerta, a long time human rights activist is well known for Co-founding the United Farm Workers along with Cesar Chavez. She has been with Cesar Chavez during his hunger strikes and in that spirit she will be with the educators who are now on their 16th day of the hunger strike. Hunger striking teachers and supporters will be camping out in tents in front of LAUSD Headquarters beginning on Thursday, 6/11/09 and will be there until the end of the School year. Teachers are demanding LAUSD stop the increase in class sizes and rescind teacher layoff notices. Over 2,000 teachers have received layoff notices and class sizes have increase up to 43 students per class in High Schools.
